Self-Inserting and A Little Inconvenience
Hey y'all. A few days ago, I released a dev log talking about the idea of potentially adding a self-insert option into A Little Inconvenience and letting you toggle Sabrina off. I expressed my thoughts on the matter and let you all weigh in.
After releasing my thread on Bluesky, hearing others thoughts through there, and sitting on it for a couple more days since then, I have decided that I will not allow for self-insert and I will be keeping the game as it is now with Sabrina as the set protagonist. You will still be able to change her name, but her appearance will be set and visible.
Aside from the importance of having Sabrina there and being able to explore her as a character, her culture, and her story, removing her (even as an option) would also diminish my vision and the story both of which I cannot compromise. Because I know if I add the option to do so, I won't be 100% happy with the game.
That is why I will not be bringing the option of self-inserting to A Little Inconvenience. For a title like this, self-inserting doesn’t work. It works for other games, just not for this one.
Now, I understand if this will disappoint people. I know a large part of players in this community love self-inserting, and if this is a deal-breaker for you, I strongly suggest you play the other wonderful titles out there that let you do that. Give those developers your support and money! They deserve it.
But please do not come into my comments or messages and accuse me of not being inclusive when my mission from the start WAS to be inclusive. This was a comment I received a while back (that has now since been deleted), and it struck a nerve with me and I haven't been able to forget it.
To everyone who approached me in a thoughtful and considerate manner, thank you. I apologize for not being able to fulfill your needs. But again, if that is a deal breaker for you, I strongly urge you to check out the other phenomenal titles in this space.

I love this, and you. People acting like they can't find another game where they CAN self-insert is so weird to me, POC/chubby women don't often appear as love interest in games or shows period, and if they do, it's not commonly long-lasting, I think this is so sweet of you to keep her as she is, and even planning to show her culture, she is her and beautiful at it, and I think you see that, this is not just about having a certain character, this is where those who go unnoticed in these genres, BE SEEN. Good job babes/my love. (I couldn't decide which one, why not just type both? 😭😂), stay firm on your choice, regardless. I love this choice alongside many others :).

I'm glad that you're sticking to your vision! The most important advice for any game developer or writer is to make it for YOU first and foremost. To try and tweak your story for every possible kind of person when you don't plan to would lead to burn out quickly (this coming from a former people pleaser!) I can't wait to see more of Sabrina (and hopefully not get her killed...alot)
I entirely agree. And honestly, it gave me a bit of the ick when people seemed so up in arms about it.
There are SO. MANY. Visuals novels where there are visible white/white passing playable characters. And black/darkerskinned individuals never complain. Ever. It was the artists choice and we understood that and had fun anyway.
I understand the want, but there is a time and a place. And this or ANY devs game is NOT! IT! Make yo own game. Putting yo own work. Create yo own dream and story to tell because this one is again…NOT YOURS.
Regardless, I’m happy you stood by your choice and let other black girls see that we are also allowed in this space and world. Representation matters even with a little backlash. 🧡

not to mention the amount of games where you CAN self-insert yet commenting on this game and complaining....something's weird.

I shouldn't have been quick to snap, I apologize. Your opinion is valid and understandable, sometimes people really do just make everything abt race when it's completely off topic. It takes away from when people speak up towards actual racism ----- I felt as though the person was on point and that there was some form of racism in people being so upset about not being able to self-insert in this game, you saying "we don't need to bring race into this" frustrated me because of that.

Sabrina is GORGEOUS and I love to see her!! Darius is understandable like!! getting a chance to pull her?? woo we'd be getting a lil crazy too!!
Sometimes there are more important things than trying to please the most amount of people. Follow your vision!! the people who mind don't matter and the people who matter don't mind!
it’s not a big deal! personally, I think the game be more fun without self inserting since you have a visual representation of who you’re playing as and don’t have to imagine it lol
I love Sabrina, I think she's great. I'm not great with words but it's fun playing as her like it's their (Sabrina and everyone) story not ours, they have a life and everything set up and we're just weighing in/peeking in for a bit and that's very fun, like stepping into their shoes for a bit.
Self-inserting is so overrated. It makes for worse characters.
